Tanguar Haor, Sunamgonj

At the foot of the Meghalaya ranges in the middle of Tahirpur and Dharmapasha Upazilla under Sunamgonj district in north-east Sylhet is a vast swampland popularly known as Tangoar Haor that spans over an area of nearly 100 square kilometres. Cascading from the Meghalaya about 30 waterfalls flow into this large water body engendering a charm that is truly rare. In 2000, it was internationally recognised as a Ramseur site. After the Sundarbans, it is the second Ramseur site in Bangladesh. Prior to that, in 1999, the government of Bangladesh earmarked Tangoar Haor as an ecologically critical area.

Tanguar haor of Sunamganj tour can be an extraordinary experience. The haor is a unique wetland ecosystem of national importance and has come into international focus. The area of Tanguar haor including 46 villages within the haor is about 100km2 of which 2,802.36 ha2 is a wetland. It is the source of livelihood for more than 40,000 people. The Government of Bangladesh declared Tanguar haor as an Ecologically Critical Area in 1999 considering its critical condition as a result of over-exploitation of its natural resources. 

Tanguar Haor is very rich with natural resources. It has developed great biodiversity consisting of 140 species of fish, 12 species of frogs, 1 species of amphibians, 6 species of turtles, 7 species of lizards, 21 species of snakes. And more than 150 species of reptiles. In winter, there are about 250 species of migratory/guest birds in this Haor. It is estimated that 20/25 lakh birds were in the TanguarHaor in the last winter season. When you want to go Tanguar Haor, you must go to Sunamganj first. Every day, Mamun and Shyamoli buses left Sayedabad (Dhaka) bus stand for Sunamganj directly. You will find the Ena Paribahan Bus from Mohakhali also. It will cost you nearly BDT 550 in the Non-AC bus for Sunamganj. It takes 6 hours to reach Sunamganj.

After reaching Sunamganj, anyone can find Laguna, CNG or Bike for going to Tahirpur. From Taherpur Bazar Ghat, you will find the affordable boat for visiting Tanguar Haor. According to your financial conditions, you will get different types and sizes boat here. If you go to Sunamganj in the winter season, you have to go Sulemanpur Bazar first using the Laguna, CNG or Bike. You have to take a boat from here to visit Tangoar Haor. The boat rent varies fast time to time. Anyone can find boats from 3 thousand taka to 8 thousand taka, all the cooking, bathing and refreshing elements are in the boat, and it’s a boat life adventure mainly! 

From Tanguar Haor, the hills of Meghalaya of India are seen clearly. About 30 small fountains or tributaries from Meghalaya came to Tanguar Haor. There is a watchtower on the side of the Haor. The water in the surrounding areas is very transparent as if anyone can see the floor of the Haor from the above.  The main two bird sanctuaries of the Tanguar Haor are the Leuchamara and Berberia Beel.

For example, Tanguar Haor, Bareker Tila, Tekerghat and Barsara, Jadukata river, Adayat Mahaprabhu’s house, Niladri Lake and the garden of silk cotton. The Jadukata River is just like a water colour picture, you will be astonished watching the mesmerizing beauty of the river. The places are so beautiful and great to explore something new. 

Tangoar Haor is worth visiting in winter (December to February) when tourists would be greeted by thousands of local and migratory species of birds, as well as in the rainy season (June to August) when bustling waves together with incessant rains and Meghalayan clouds create a scene that charms all and sundry. In winter, numerous migratory birds join the local birds giving rise to an eye-soothing abundance of fauna. The whole place looks like a place of another planet when the birds are there, whispering and tweeting in their place.
